Talking at the Museum of Modern Art and World Bank at two separate events in the US, Lahore Biennale Artistic Director Rashid Rana said the event aspires to be one without walls, in every sense of the word. “The objective is to produce something that has local and global relevance,” he said. Flanked by foundation executive director Qudsia Rahim, Rana spoke of Lahore as a novel context for the biennale, owing to its rich artistic and cultural milieu, as well as how the generic biennale format may be adjusted to suit the unique urban reality of the city.

Through this approach, the Lahore Biennale, our flagship event, will seek to readdress the city of Lahore and its varying energies every two years through art. “With the inaugural event, it is only natural and perhaps even necessary to reflect on the ways in which the format may be used anew in a distinct and meaningful way,” he said, adding, “I hope that starting with a note of self-reflection will become a sustained practice that allows the Lahore Biennale to respond flexibly and urgently to new fields of inquiry for many cycles to come.”
The foundation had announced Rana as the event’s artistic director in March this year.
