ISLAMABAD: A city police constable shot a suspected carjacker who did not stop at a police checkpoint. The policeman also died later having been stabbed by the suspect in his effort to free himself.

The man was later identified by some residents of sector I-10 as an alleged carjacker, police claimed.

Police said the suspected carjacker had first made a failed attempt to lift a car from sector I-10/4 on Tuesday night. He fled from the area and entered street 53 sector I-10/1 where he tried to lift another car but a security guard spotted him.

The carjacker managed to flee after a brief scuffle with the security guard. But the guard along with some residents continued to chase him through different streets. They also informed the police about the attempted carjacking and the physical appearance and clothing of the suspect.

Later, the suspect appeared at a checkpoint near Khayaban-e-Sir Syed where he was stopped for checking by constable Mukamal Shah, but he resisted and clung on to a truck passing through the checkpoint, police said.

Shah chased the truck on his motorbike. The suspected carjacker left the truck and entered a street in Khayaban-e-Sir Syed which was closed at the end. Shah who was chasing him, caught him at the street end. During the scuffle, the carjacker stabbed the constable in the chest, police said.

In retaliation, Shah shot the suspect in the head with his weapon from a point blank range. The suspect died at the spot. The injured policeman informed his colleagues at the checkpoint about the incident but could not speak much.

He was traced and shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) hospital where he was pronounced dead. ‘He had received a single stab wound in the chest. The dagger had punctured his right lung and the renal veins, causing his quick death, said a doctor who had conducted autopsy on the constable’s body.

The postmortem report said that the injured policeman also had a cut on his face which could have been sustained during the scuffle.

DIG (Operations) Bani Amin Khan and other police officials reached the scene and also visited the hospital. They paid rich tributes to the constable for laying down his life in the line of duty.

His funeral was held at Police Line Headquarters. It was attended by Inspector General of Police Islamabad Wajid Ali Durrani and other senior police officials.

The IGP said that the family of the killed constable will be compensated as per policy of the government. His name would be forwarded for QPM and his younger brother would be offered a job in Islamabad police.

The killed cop left behind a widow, a four-year-old son Salman Shah and two-year-old daughter Zainab. He had joined Islamabad police in 2001 and belonged to Angro Barri Tehsil Tangi, District Charasada. He was living in Khayaban-e-Sir Syed. His body was dispatched to his native village after funeral prayers in police line headquarters Islamabad.
