Technology: Dealer vehicle registration system on the cards

A system of registration of vehicles called Dealer Vehicle Registration System (DVRS) would be functional by October, an official at the Special Monitoring Unit for Law and Order has told The Express Tribune.
Under the system, vehicles will be registered and licence plates will be issued at the sales points – car showrooms and outlets.
For the purpose, the SMU has developed a DVRS software in collaboration with the Punjab Information Technology Board, documents available with The Express Tribune showed.
Eligible dealers will obtain licences from Excise and Taxation Department offices to get access to the software. The customers will get registration plates and related documents from dealers.
The dealers would then send the documents to the Excise and Taxation Department on owner’s behalf. After verification of documents, the Excise and Taxation Department will send the registration book to the buyer’s house.
“Pakistan will be the first country in South Asia to have such a system,” the SMU official said. He said the DVRS would help curb crime because vehicles without number plates were often used for violent crimes. He said the DVRS would spare citizens the hassle of visiting the Excise and Taxation offices.
The official said the system would help stabilise department’s revenues because it would receive registration fees quickly. The system would promote a business-friendly environment by providing dealers with an opportunity to partner with the government, the official said.
