A man shot dead four persons, three of them of the same family, over a dispute among women in Dhok Awan village in the precincts of Chotala Police Station near here on Tuesday.

The killer, Malik Matloob, managed to escape after shooting his sister-in-law (his brother Hafiz Mahboob’s wife) Razia Begum, Razia’s mother Bhagan Bibi, his own 18-year old daughter Mehreen and a neighbour named Kamran.

Malik, 50, returned from abroad a few days ago, is said to have gone to the house of his brother, killing his wife and her mother. Both women died instantly. Then he returned to his house and dragged his daughter, huddling under a bed in fear, and shot her and then went after a neighbour, Kamran, who was working as a labourer at a house in the village. Kamran was shot a number of times and was taken to nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

DPO Jhellum Mujahid Akbar Khan arrived at the scene with a contingent of police. They took the dead bodies into their custody and took them to hospital. Later, the police handed the bodies of the deceased over to their relatives after a post-mortem examination and completion of other legal formalities.

The police team, led by the DSP and SHO, is conducting raids to arrest the culprit.

Incidentally, a man from the murderer’s family had killed seven persons, including his own parents, and siblings over a family conflict 13 years back.
