LAHORE:

Former Punjab governor Chaudhry Sarwar on Monday announced a campaign to contact party workers to make Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) 20th Foundation Day celebrations in Islamabad on April 24 a success.

Sarwar made the announcement during a consultative meeting on Foundation Day preparations. MPA Mian Aslam Iqbal and representatives from the party’s women’s and youth wings attended the meeting.

Sarwar asked the government to refrain from creating obstacles for workers going to Islamabad for the celebrations. He said the PTI had always respected the law. However, he said, the government would be responsible if it created hurdles to the event.

Referring to Panama Papers leak, he said the government still had time to constitute an inquiry commission, headed by the chief justice of Pakistan. Otherwise, he said, Imran Khan would announce the party’s future strategy in this regard on April 24.

Sarwar accused government leaders of making excuses in defence of corruption charges against them. He demanded that they bring back their money to Pakistan.

He said PTI workers were willing to render all sorts of sacrifices to rid the country of corruption.

Iqbal said the PTI was united under Imran Khan. The party’s Foundation Day would be made a successful event, he said. “PTI workers trust the leadership of their party chief. They will attend the April 24 event with the zeal they had shown in the party’s struggle after the 2013 general elections.”
