BHAKKAR:
“There has been a campaign for establishment of a high court bench in Sargodha for six years. Countless strikes by lawyers to press for this demand have only impeded litigation. Something must be done to end this deadlock because people are losing faith in the judiciary,” a group of lawyers said at a press conference in the district bar room on Friday.

They said the establishment of a high court bench had not been found practical. “This is why the strikes and protests by lawyers for this demand have not borne fruit,” said Malik Tariq Khokar. He was accompanied by lawyers Malik Faiz Muhammad Bilal, Rashid Latif and Arif Maikan.

“If the bench is established, it will be no good for the people of Bhakkar,” they said. “It is more feasible to attach Bhakkar to the Multan bench of the high court.”

They said the Bhakkar district bar had passed several resolutions seeking access to the high court bench in Multan but nothing had come of them.

The lawyers urged the chief justice of Lahore High Court to attach Bhakkar to the Multan high court bench. They said a demonstration and a hunger strike had been called on April 11 to press for this demand. “Scores of lawyers will join the hunger strike.” “Bhakkar is 230 kilometres from Sargodha. It takes six hours to get there,” they said. “Multan is 180 kilometres away and it is a two-hour journey,” they said.

“It is not easy for the people of Bhakkar to travel 365 kilometres to Lahore for their cases,” they said. “It often takes people three days for a single journey.” They said lawyers of the district should come together to resolve problems faced by the litigants.
