LAHORE:

“Women have always [played] their role on defence fronts. History acknowledges their bravery, courage and determination,” IGP Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera said on Thursday.

He was speaking at the passing out parade of 233 women constables at Police Training College, Chuhng.

Women in the police — bumpy road to equality

The IGP said that it was a moment of pride for him that a large number of women had joined the Police Department. “I hope that they will work diligently and help curb crime. There are already policewomen working along with their male colleagues,” he said.

Sukhera said that 550 women constables from the last year’s batch had been efficiently discharging their duties. He said women corporals at the Counter-Terrorism Department were doing well in fight against terrorists.

Chuhng Police Training School Commandant DIG Fayyaz Ahmad Dev told the IGP that the 233 constables hailed from 23 districts. They included five from the Federal Investigative Agency, 55 from Multan, 25 from Gujrat, 20 from Bahawalnagar, 18 from Gujranwala and 17 from Vehari, he said.

He said one of the recruits had an MPhil degree, two had LLBs, 18 MA and 100 bachelor’s. Another 78 had intermediate certificates and 38 had done matriculation, he said. Their eight-month on-the-job training would start in July.
