Off-road jeep rally on 27th

Over 50 drivers will exhibit their skills on a 17-kilometre track

LAHORE: The provincial government will organise Lahore’s first-ever off-road jeep rally on March 27.

More than 50 drivers will exhibit their skills on a 17-kilometre track developed on the River Ravi bed. A cavalcade of jeeps will tour on various city roads a day before the rally on March 26. Tourism Minister Mashhood Ahmad Khan told a press conference on Thursday the rally would start at 9am; the winners would be announced in the evening. Drivers will be divided in three categories. The winners will get cash prizes ranging between Rs40,000 and Rs100,000.

The minister said those wanting to participate in the rally should register at the Football Stadium a day before the contest. He said the rally had been planned on the pattern of Cholistan Jeep Rally. He said the city government, the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA), the Sheikhupura DCO, Rescue 1122 and the Health Department had collaborated to organise the rally.

He said a Strawberry Fiesta would be organised at five places along the route to promote strawberry cultivation along the River Ravi bed. The rally would help promoting Lahore’s culture, Khan said.Punjab Sports Board Director General Usman Anwar said jeep racing was becoming popular as a professional sport in the country. He said that the government would also introduce Formula One racing in the country. Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab Managing Director Ahmar Malik was also present on the occasion.
