KARACHI:
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has postponed its cleanliness drive in the wake of its leaders, elected representatives and workers being arrested by the Rangers, the party said on Tuesday.

The 'Clean Karachi Campaign', which began on March 10, has been postponed for the time being. This was decided by Rabita Committee convener Nadeem Nusrat in an emergency meeting, said the MQM in a statement.

According to party spokesperson Aminul Haque, more than 50 workers have been arrested by law enforcement agencies (LEAs) since the beginning of this month. "MQM workers and citizens were enthusiastic and the drive was running smoothly," he said. "But we had to postpone it due to the arrests."

Apart from Rabita Committee deputy convener Shahid Pasha, the arrested men include elected representatives of the local government, such as Baldia union council-29 chairman Nadir Hussain, who, according to the party, was picked up while the campaign was under way. A councillor from Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Noman Malik, has also been arrested.

In the press statement, the party alleged that this was an attempt of the establishment to push it to the wall, adding that LEAs were stopping the MQM from carrying out the cleanliness drive that it had initiated on its own.

The drive, which was earlier said to continue till the mayor and deputy mayor assume office, will now resume after consultations, said Haque.
