KARACHI: Activist Alamgir Khan has offered assistance to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) for its cleanliness drive, which is starting from Thursday (today).

"I offer my tractor and broomstick to the MQM, if they need them," Khan said during a press conference at his residence on Wednesday. "Besides, I am all there to assist them, anytime."

Khan said he was glad over the party's decision to step forward in helping people of the metropolis. "I welcome all political parties to work together and put aside all their differences for the sake of the city," he said.

MQM on Tuesday had announced to launch a cleanliness drive in the city from Thursday (today).

Sharing future plans, Khan said he has decided to expand his #FixIt campaign to include improving the city's transport system as well as the environment.

He explained that after receiving an 'overwhelming response', the campaign would soon be transformed into an institution, with a dedicated team of professionals and an office. The new organisation would have paid employees who will look after the city's civic matters, as well as a media cell and complaint centre.

Talking about the city's deteriorating environment, he said they will soon start a tree plantation drive to reduce pollution. "I demand the government to take serious interest in making Karachi an environment-friendly city," he said.

Khan said he has met transporters who informed him about their problems, adding that 10 years ago the city had almost 21,000 buses but they have now been reduced to around 6,000. We are soon going to hold a 'grand' meeting with Karachi Transport Ittehad to listen to transporters' problems, he said.

At the end of the press conference, Khan surprisingly appreciated the efforts of the Sindh government, saying he recently came to know that the local government ministry has invited tenders for the establishment of six garbage transfer stations in the city to help dispose of garbage.
