The chic fashion blogger behind The Londonite spills her style secrets

Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their bodies to their advantage

How would you describe your body type?

At 5’ 3”, I’d say I’m petite. And I have an hourglass body shape.

Has your body type changed over the last five years?

Definitely! In my early twenties I had a more athletic build, whereas now I’ve gotten a few curves. I’ve also noticed my metabolism has slowed down, which means I’ve got to work a lot harder to keep those extra pounds off!

How has your style changed over the years?

I wouldn’t say it’s changed as much as it has evolved. I’m more aware of what silhouettes flatter my body and more importantly, what I should steer clear from. I’ve also become more confident with trying on new things and I’ve added a lot more colour to my wardrobe. Of course, like a lot of us, I look back in horror at some of my outfit choices but it’s part of the fun and it’s important to get it wrong sometimes to know what doesn’t work for you or your body type.

In your opinion what is your most troublesome area?

I would say my hips. They can be a blessing and a curse. Having wide hips and being on the shorter side means that a lot of the styles strutting down the runway on lean models would look absolutely ridiculous on me. Although I try and make the most of runway trends by accentuating my smaller waist when I can and by belting my dresses or wearing high-waisted skirts.

How do you dress your body according to your body type?

With my body shape I always try and keep it tasteful. Nothing too baggy or too tight. I’m a huge fan of skinny jeans but again with the wider hips, I make sure the denim has a lot of stretch to it. I also try to look taller by wearing pointed shoes,
ankle-grazing trousers and of course, mega flares with heels underneath!

In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here?

Just because something is in fashion, doesn’t mean it’s going to work for you. It’s all right to ditch a trend that doesn’t flatter you, don’t give in to the pressure! I’ve learnt that lesson the hard way over the years.

What silhouettes suit your body the most?

To create a flattering silhouette on my body type, I use the rule of thirds and don’t split my body in half. Opting for a tight and slim silhouette gives me the illusion of an extra few inches and I avoid all things boxy!

What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why?

I avoid anything with cheap fringing. Good quality, heavy duty fringing can transform you into a rock star but the cheap stuff, which sadly you see far too often, makes it look like you have Maggi noodles hanging off your outfit.
