PESHAWAR: At least 15 people were killed and 30 others injured when a bomb exploded on a bus carrying government officials in Peshawar on Wednesday.

The attack took place on Peshawar’s Sunehri Masjid road after the bus picked up government employees from Shergarh in Mardan and was transporting them to work in the city.

“The blast was caused by a timed-improvised explosive device (IED) planted in a tool box inside the bus,” SP Cantonment Kashif Zulfiqar said. “There were 40-50 people on the bus.”

“The bus carrying PDA employees was targeted at at 7:55am,” added DC Riaz Mehsud.

“The top part of the bus has blown off and is being cut to pull out the injured,” an eye witness told The Express Tribune.

Windows of nearby buildings broke due to the impact of the explosion.

Residents of the area shifted the injured in their cars to Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), closing the vicinity for traffic.

Sources said at least 15 of the total number of injured people at the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar were air force employees.

BDS officials said 10kg of explosives were planted in the bus, while further investigation was underway.

“Emergency has been declared and all doctors have been called in to handle trauma,” hospital spokesperson Jamil Shah said.

Many of the wounded were in critical condition and the death toll could rise, he added.

PM condemns the attack

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack.

11 killed, 31 injured in Jamrud check post blast

According to a statement, he expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives in the said attack.

“These cowardly attacks cannot shatter our unflinching resolve against terrorism,” the premier said.

The PM directed the authorities concerned to give best treatment to those injured during the attack, asking the LEAs to hunt down those responsible for the attack.

In February last year, at least 20 worshippers were killed and 59 injured in a gun and suicide attack at Imamia Masjid in Phase 5 of Hayatabad.

Attacks have fallen since the government crackdown after the 2014 Army Public School attack and the Taliban have been squeezed into small pockets of territory.

However, militant groups remain able to launch sporadic attacks on security forces and civilian targets. Two Pakistani employees of the US consulate in Peshawar and some soldiers were killed by a bomb while on a drug-eradication mission earlier this month.

    Two questions from authorities.
If the destination of the bus was Civil Secretariat, what was it doing in Saddar area? Because their terminal point is in the vicinity of Central Jail. May be the target was someother place.
The Provincial Government instructed the public transport a couple of years agoto remove CNG cylinders from buses and vans, why was this unfortunate bus still using four CNG cylinders as the major damage was caused by the cylinders?Recommend

First and foremost we condemn the senseless killing of 15 government employees in a bus blast. Our heartfelt prayers go out to the families of people killed, and we hope for early and complete recovery of people injured in today’s attack. There are desperate terrorist on the run; attacking soft targets to install fear and hopelessness among the masses. All concerned parties have to work together and go after the terrorist networks to eliminate there kind of attacks altogether.

There is no paradise on the route to phoenixl! Those who have called foi the military solution are now following the path of what occurred in former east Pakistan and is being experienced in the middle east for over five years, with ultimate foreign intervention.

@Parvez: Stop playing childish politics when innocent people are being targeted by cowards. No one of any party wants foreign funded criminals to harm civilians. Neither Imran, Nawaz, Zardari or anyone else. Society needs to continue to work together to defeat these cowards who can only attach children, women and civilians on buses now that they are being defeated. Every now and then the cowards will try to scare people but do not let yourself be led into blame games which is what they want. The public should remain united and work together to root out such cowards before they strike. Recommend
