Family members of a man who died of injuries sustained in a road accident on Tuesday held a demonstration in front of the Dera Ghazi Khan teaching hospital on Wednesday.

They said the man had died because there were no doctors at the teaching hospital’s trauma centre for two hours.

Abid Hussain, the victim’s father, told journalists that Nauman, 20, was on his way to work when an unidentified man on a motorcycle rammed into him. Nauman was seriously injured and was taken to Nishtar Hospital in Multan where doctors treated him.

He said the doctors later told them that Nauman’s condition was stable and he could return home.

On Wednesday, Nauman’s health took a turn for the worse and he was taken to the Dera Ghazi Khan teaching hospital where, according to Hussain, doctors did not attend to him for two hours. Nauman died the hospital from the injuries sustained in the accident.

Members of his family gathered and roughed up the doctors at the Dera Ghazi Khan teaching hospital’s trauma centre. They shoved them out of the ward and set the stretchers and beds at the trauma centre on fire. The protesters blocked Jampur Road in front of the hospital and burnt tyres. They blocked the road for traffic for several hours and shouted slogans against the doctors at the trauma centre. They also forced medical stores on the road to shutter down for the day.

Police Deputy Superintendent Hafiz Khizer Zaman visited the scene and told journalists that they would take action after someone from the victim’s family filed a complaint.

Dera Ghazi Khan teaching hospital Medical Superintendent Moosa Kaleem said they would take action against the doctors guilty of negligence in the matter. He said that he had formed a committee to look into the matter.

The Health executive district officer, too, formed a committee to investigate the matter.
