LAHORE:
The Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) will be obtaining the assistance of the United Kingdom’s (UK’s) Office of Qualification and Examination (Ofqual), Tevta Chairperson Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said on Thursday.

Sheikh made the comments while speaking to the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) Head Ben French at the Tevta Secretariat. The Tevta chairperson said the authority would use the assistance rendered by the Ofqual to revamp standards at its institutes province-wide. He said an MoU in this regard had already been inked between the Tevta and the Ofqual in the presence of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif in December, 2015.

The Tevta chairperson said the Ofqual had delegated the responsibility of implementing the MoU to DFID on its behalf in a bid to promote vocational training across the province. He said the Ofqual had great experience in using an array of tools to secure and maintain qualification standards. Sheikh said this facilitated the realisation of positive educational outcomes. He said the Tevta was committed to imparting vocational training to five million youngsters by 2018. He said the MoU with the Ofqual would also help the authority realise its objectives.

French praised the initiatives taken by the Tevta to promote vocational training across the Punjab. He said the Ofqual was an independent qualification regulator working in the vocational qualification sector. French said it also regulated qualifications, examinations and national assessment in England and Northern Ireland. He said he had been told that Her Majesty’s Government had always enjoyed a good relationship with Pakistan across all sectors.

He said this was particularly true for the poverty alleviation, health, vocational training and education sectors. French expressed hope that initiatives taken by the Tevta would help overcome unemployment in the Punjab. He said the DFID would also extend its full support to the Tevta to impart vocational training to youngsters across the province. PR
