SUKKUR:
Taking jibe at the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief, Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) chairperson Marvi Memon said it will be better for the country and its people to think little about and avoid responding to Imran Khan’s statements.

Protecting the vulnerable: Govt increases BISP stipend

Talking to the media in Sukkur on Sunday, she said there was no injustice in the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award, but if any province is crying foul, it might be an attempt to conceal its own faults. “I don’t want to comment on it because we respect provincial autonomy,” she said. According to her, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif treats all the provinces equally and it would be wrong to complain about discrimination.

According to her, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) information secretary Qamar Zaman Kaira is a senior politician and she would, therefore, not comment on his statement on the recent increase in the BISP stipend. Talking about the increase, she said that it is the right of poor women. “We are trying to fulfil our responsibilities,” she said. “I wish PPP would have fulfilled its responsibilities in this regard. We don’t want to harm the self-respect of poor women and, therefore, a biometric system for the disbursement of the stipend is being introduced.” She added that the programme will start this year.

She claimed that the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) is strictly adhering to its manifesto and, as a result, load-shedding has been minimised throughout the country and work on energy projects is under way. “War against terrorism is ongoing in full swing and will continue until the elimination of the last terrorist,” she said.

Talking about the situation in Tharparkar, she said it is not the problem of any one province or the federal government. Rather, she said, it relates to the whole nation. “Yesterday, during my visit to Tharparkar, I offered condolences to the mothers who lost their children, besides increasing their stipend under BISP,” she said, adding that she has also issued instructions to increase the staff of BISP in the district.

Skills to self-sustain: FATA women to get vocational training

“We are also trying to bring the World Food Programme in the area to minimise their [locals’] suffering to some extent,” she said.

Talking about the bogus text messages regarding BISP stipends, she said “We are blocking those SIMs through which people are getting fraudulent messages about BISP and sharing information about such SIMs with the Federal Investigation Agency so that stern action could be taken against the culprits.”
