Wardrobe essentials for working women

Following are a few wardrobe staples every working woman should own & invest in if she wishes to make right impression

Many women are dressed to impress at their workplaces, but experts say it is more important to get noticed for the right reasons, especially in a corporate environment. There’s a fine line between sophisticated and sultry, modest and mediocre, style statements and desperate cries for attention – and your wardrobe should define where you stand. Following are a few wardrobe staples every working woman should own and invest in if she wishes to make the right impression at work.

Classic button down shirt

There are a few things you can never go wrong with and the simple white button-down shirt is one of them. Couple it with a pencil skirt or a pair of slim trousers to trump the look. Make your outfit formal by sporting a dark blazer or keeping it simple with your most comfortable pair of skinny jeans. Try it out, and you’ll always pull off a winning look.

Ankle-cut trousers

The ankle-cut is perhaps the most versatile of all. Be it a plain dark pair or a plaid one in subtle hues, it forms great combinations with most wardrobe essentials and gives you the perfect opportunity to show off a new pair of shoes.

Silk scarves

Bright coloured silk scarves can transform any dull, old outfit and give it an interesting, workplace-appropriate look. Avoid picking patterns that are overly striking and opt for colour combinations that will compliment your work outfits.

Custom tailored suits

Every working woman should own a suit that is custom tailored according to her body. The classic pinstriped suit will remain in vogue eternally and so will the all-black look.  But if you’re daring enough, you may venture into the world of chequered patterns and play around with shades such as blue, maroon, grey and teal. Complete the look with a pair of black or nude pumps.

Accessorise your look

Finally, remember it is your accessories that complete your outfit. Make sure your wardrobe includes a large leather tote, a pair of pearl studs, and a chain-linked wristwatch for daily wear.

The pencil skirt

The pencil skirt has been a workplace favourite for decades, and will continue to remain so. With the perfectly modest length and countless fabric/colour options to choose from, the skirt can easily be transformed into an evening attire, if you have to get somewhere straight after work. Pair it with a silk button-down blouse, freshen your makeup and make a killer hairdo.

Cashmere sweater

Ladies, if you’re going to invest in anything this season, make sure it’s a gorgeous new cashmere sweater. Wear it with your dark denims or straight trousers for a cool, comfortable yet classy look during winter season and steer clear of hoodies and casual pullovers. A woollen scarf, a pair of ankle boots and an oversized tote bag will complete your look.

Spot the right shoes

If you find yourself reaching for the same old pair of sneakers or battered ballet flats for work simply because they’re comfy – kill the habit. Go shoe shopping and invest in a pair of black patent leather loafers, a pair each of black and nude pumps and white slip-on sneakers for those casual Fridays.
