HYDERABAD:

In a district known for being one of the two strongholds of Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F), the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) seems to have successfully made inroads.

Initial and unofficial results show that Sindh’s ruling party won a majority of the seats in Saturday’s local government elections in Sanghar after security fears led to two consecutive postponements.

The polling was held in 68 union councils, three municipal committees and 10 town committees. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) did not announce elections for one municipal committee (MC) and two union councils (UC) due to an ongoing litigation about their boundaries in Sindh High Court.

The PPP candidates also won a town committee (TC), containing three wards in the rural town of Kandiari, unopposed. The PPP clinched two MCs and six TCs while the PML-F could lay its hands on only one MC and one TC. Both the parties won an equal number of seats in two TCs while one TC was won by independent candidates.
