Pakistan can move to the top 25 economies of the world by 2025 and be among the top 10 by 2047 because of the passion of people and the talent of youth, said Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reform Ahsan Iqbal.

“Pakistan is a successful emerging state that could be developed economically via self-belief and positivity,” he said, adding the country needed 7-8% transformational growth in the next 10 years to mobilise resources to socially develop backward areas and create employment opportunities for the growing youth population.

He said the government’s Vision 2025 and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) would help realise the dream of economically developed Pakistan. “I believe the passion of Pakistani people can make this dream true.”

The minister appreciated UET engineers and scientists, saying the quality work of the alumni of UET spoke volumes about their hard work and research.

He assured the audience that workable recommendations of research papers would be taken into account and utilised in policy-making.

He also announced that the 650km missing link on western route of the CPEC would be completed by December 2016.

Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) Chairman Dr Javed Qureshi offered awards for researchers and inventors of special projects.

UET Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid said UET was the pioneer of engineering universities in the country and its graduates were working throughout the world, serving humanity in different capacities.

He said the reunion was organised to enable all engineers and scientists, who had completed their studies, to meet and exchange ideas.

“Being the focal point of studies, the university feels it is its noble duty to gather all these renowned personalities. This would not only facilitate close contact between engineers and scientists, but would also create a platform for further communication among experts in the field of science and technology,” he added.

Talking to media, Khalid said 2016 would be the year of celebrations for all UETians at the international level. He said the university had planned several literary, co-curricular and social events to mark these celebrations.
