ISLAMABAD: Women in large numbers blocked Islamabad Expressway for hours on Saturday morning in protest against gas outages.

The traffic was suspended as the protesters chanted slogans demanding the government to resolve the issue.

Holding placards bearing slogans against low gas pressure and inflation, they said their lives had been severely disrupted. Farhat Nasim, a mother of three, said she had  not been able to prepare a meal for her family for the last four days.

Arshad Shafiq, who works for a private company, said, “I have to arrange breakfast for the whole family from a restaurant because there is no gas in the morning,” he said.

Even though the entire city has been affected by low gas pressure, the areas hit hardest are Ghouri Town, Iqbal Town, Kurri Road, Dhok Kala Khan, Banni Chowk and Waris Khan. An official of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited said that the reason for low gas pressure was increase in its demand. He said the people should avoid using geysers and heaters.
