Pakistan Test captain Misbahul Haq, signed by Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) side Rangpur Riders, was at a loss as to why he spent most of the tournament on the bench; despite a man-of-the-match display in the first match where he scored a match-winning half-century.

The 41-year-old, who has retired from international limited overs cricket, said it was not easy watching on from the sidelines.

“It is not easy sitting on the bench for so long,” said Misbah. “I can't say much on this, but I guess the team owners and the coaches know what is required.”

Left-arm fast bowler Wahab Riaz, who returned to Lahore midway through the tournament, said Misbah handled himself really well despite the snub.

“Obviously it is not easy to be ignored like this for the majority of the matches,” said Wahab. “It has been tough on Misbah but he has handled himself well.”

Other Pakistani players were also clueless as to why they were left on the bench. “I didn't go there only for the money,” said discarded wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal, who was afforded only two starts. “I went there as I thought the BPL would allow me to further remind the selectors that I am doing well.”

A total of 17 players from Pakistan were included in this year’s BPL, but only pacemen Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Sami were regular fixtures for their respective sides.

Zaid Noorsumar | 8 years ago | Reply @ResultsMatter - Good points. I am quite certain Misbah was only benched for cricketing reasons. But though I agree with you that in the other matches he played slowly, his fellow batsmen were also struggling for form - probably because the pitches were sluggish throughout the tournament, which is why scores around 130-135 were the norm. It's also worth mentioning that 1-2 of Misbah's innings were played in the midst of a collapse which explains his low scoring rate. On the other hand, even when he made 61 off 39, he scored at run-a-ball for the first 20-25 balls...
Results Matter | 8 years ago | Reply Misbah scored 61 (39 balls) in the first match against the weakest team in BPL. But in subsequent matches he struggled to score at pace needed for a T20 in 4 subsequent matches: 17 (22), 6 (17), 22 (27), ... It's ridiculous to allege incompetency/bias on behalf of the team when they demand results from players to whom they're paying big salaries.
