Abbasi has been asked to appear before the court on January 11 in connection with a petition filed by the Site Association of Trade and Industry and others.
The petitioners challenged that SSGC should not be allowed to divert gas supply to the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited at the expense of stakeholders in its own region of service.
The petitioners said that SSGC has violated court orders by failing to supply 276 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas to the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), which is also a respondent in the case.
KESC officials assert that during a cabinet committee meeting on energy crisis held on July 29, 2009, SSGC had given assurances that the company would ensure supply of 276 mmcfd of gas to the electricity provider.
SHC had directed SSGC to make maximum efforts to improve the supply of gas to KESC, but the power provider asserted that the supply has been limited to about 60 mmcfd.
An SSGC official declined to comment on the court order, but said that gas supply had been “exceptionally low on Thursday because Badin, Bhit and Zamzama gas fields encountered temporary problems.”
He revealed that the supply to KESC was limited to 50 mmcfd on Thursday from the earlier level of 73 mmcfd but expressed hope that the situation would improve soon as the problems on the fields are resolved.
