Triple Frontier: When Sicario meets Narcos
With an all-star cast of Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Pedro Pascal, this is entertainment threefold!
After being stuck in production-hell for quite some time with everyone from Tom Hardy, Johnny Depp and Mark Wahlberg slated to star at one point, Triple Frontier has finally finished production. With filmmaker JC Chandor at the helm and Oscar-winning writer Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) penning the script, the first trailer of the film seems like it will be offering a slightly different twist on the heist movie formula.
Set almost entirely in South America, the film follows a team of special forces operatives who reunite in South America to forego the most ambitious and challenging mission of their lives: robbing one of the most dangerous cartels in the world.
Now in the hands of lesser-known filmmaker, Triple Frontier could have been just another heist movie. But with a talented filmmaker like Chandor, who has already delivered with sharply crafted dramas like Margin Call and A Most Violent Year, one can expect the film to deliver on the story and the plot.
But the main draw of the film has to be the terrific all-star cast featuring the likes of: Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Pedro Pascal and Garrett Hedlund. No heist movie is complete without an all-star cast and watching these talented actors play off each other should be fun to watch.
The trailer itself gives us a background into the lives of our main characters and how they were motivated to take this dangerous leap of faith:
But the crux of the trailer still focuses on the potentially tricky heist the characters have to execute, set against the backdrop of the ‘triple frontier’ border between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, which just so happens to be where the cartel is housed.
Triple Frontier seems like something that all fans of the action movie genre will enjoy. And looking at the trailer, a number of elements – particularly the action-sequences – seem very reminiscent to Denis Villenueve’s slick action-thriller Sicario from 2015. At the same time, the film should be something that fans of the Netflix original series Narcos will be interested in. At any rate, it definitely seems like something truly exciting worth making time for.
Triple Frontier hits Netflix and select cinema screens on March 19, 2019.

“You’ve been shot five times for your country and you can’t even afford to send your kids to college,” says Isaac’s character Pope. “If we had accomplished half the things that we’ve accomplished in any other profession, we’d be set for life,” he continues.
