RAWALPINDI: The IESCO Family Welfare Hospital, adjacent to the WAPDA hospital, fails to fulfill its purpose as it is located at quite a distance from the target audience it aims to serve.

According to a hospital official, it takes about 25 minutes for any patient to get to the hospital.

“A family welfare centre like this needs to be in a highly populated zone where women can easily visit for consultation and avail our services,” the official said. “On any given day we receive around 10-20 patients and our job is to offer initial consultations and refer the patients to either WAPDA or Holy Family Hospital if needed,” he added.

The official also confirmed that three posts of Family Welfare Councilors have been lying vacant since the past two years.

Among other issues faced by the facility is lack of coordination with the WAPDA Hospital.

The official added that usually patients seeking advice on family planning visit the nearby WAPDA Hospital which is supposed to refer the relevant cases to them but they fail to do so.

The family planning facility is required to cover the population of Dhoke Chiraghuddin, Dhoke Kashmiriyan, Rahimabad, Gawal Mandi and Tang Marir Hassan.

The family welfare counselors carry out an awareness visit once a month in which they are supposed to cover all these localities. The official explained that due to lack of coordination and staff with the WAPDA Hospital, sometimes they cannot manage to meet the targets assigned to them.
