Bangladesh fight back in first Pakistan Test

KHULNA: Bangladesh, trailing Pakistan by 296 runs on the first innings, were 142 for no loss in their second knock at tea on the fourth day of the first Test in Khulna on Friday.

Tamim Iqbal was unbeaten on 85 and his opening partner Imrul Kayes was on 56 at the break.

The hosts are still 154 runs behind with all their 10 wickets intact.
Earlier, Pakistan were all out for 628 shortly before lunch after resuming the day at 537 for five.

1st Test: Pakistan tighten grip against Bangladesh

Bangladesh began a long haul to save the first Test after Pakistan ran up a 296-run lead on the fourth day of the first Test in Khulna on Friday.

The tourists took their overnight score of 537 for five to 628 before they were all out shortly before lunch at the Sheikh Abu Naser stadium.

Bangladesh were six for no loss in their second innings at the break with Tamim Iqbal on four and Imrul Kayes on two.

The hosts will need to bat a major part of the remaining five sessions to prevent Pakistan taking the lead in the two-Test series.

The overnight pair of Asad Shafiq (83) and Sarfraz Ahmed (82) carried their sixth-wicket partnership to 126 to build a sizeable lead for Pakistan.

Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam picked up three of the five wickets in the morning session to finish with creditable figures of six for 163.

Debutant fast bowler Mohammad Shahid claimed his first Test wicket when he ended the sixth-wicket stand by having Sarfraz caught at mid-on by substitute fielder Litton Das.

Taijul bowled Wahab Riaz for zero in the next over and then trapped Yasir Shah leg-before that gave the 23-year-old his third five-wicket haul in six Tests so far.

Between those two wickets, star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan claimed his lone success in the innings when he took a return catch to dismiss Shafiq.

Tajiul wrapped up the innings when wicket-keeper Mohammad Mahmudullah, standing in for the injured Mushfiqur Rahim, stumped Zulfiqar Babar.

The second Test begins at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Dhaka from May 6.

1st Test: Hafeez completes maiden double-ton as Pakistan take lead

Mohammad Hafeez scored his maiden double-century as Pakistan easily surpassed Bangladesh's first innings total of 332 on the third day of the first Test in Khulna on Thursday.

Hafeez was unbeaten on 200 off 287 balls as Pakistan moved to 352 for three after lunch at the Sheikh Abu Naser stadium and set to build a huge lead with seven wickets in hand.

Hafeez has so far hit 21 boundaries and three sixes as he scored his career-best score.

Azhar Ali was dismissed in the morning session after Pakistan resumed at 227-1.

Having taken his overnight score of 65 to 83, Azhar was bowled by Shuvagata Hom to end a 227-run partnership for the second wicket with Hafeez.

Younis Khan (33) kept Hafeez company at lunch on 31, the pair having added 56 for the third wicket. But he was bowled by Taijul Islam.

Bangladesh took the field without captain and wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim, who had injured a finger while attempting to take a catch on the second day.

Imrul Kayes kept wickets and the captaincy was handed to Tamim Iqbal, whose review for a leg-before appeal when Hafeez was on 173 was turned down by both the on-field and TV umpires.

The second and final Test of the short series will start at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Dhaka on May 6.

1st Test: Ton-up Hafeez leads Pakistan's strong reply

Opener Mohammad Hafeez hit an unbeaten century as Pakistan reached 227 for one in reply to Bangladesh's 332 at stumps on the second day of the first Test in Khulna on Wednesday.

The tourists finally enjoyed a successful day on an otherwise miserable tour, where they were whitewashed 3-0 in the one-day series and lost to Bangladesh for the first time in a Twenty20 international.

Hafeez made 137 not out, his eighth Test hundred and the third in his last four innings, after Pakistan had ended Bangladesh's hopes of posting a mammoth first innings total.

Hafeez has so far hit 12 fours and two sixes after surviving a narrow escape in the fourth over of the innings when TV umpire Paul Reiffel overturned a decision for a catch at the wicket off Taijul Islam.

Hafeez put on 50 for the first-wicket with debutant Sami Aslam and 177 in an unbroken partnership with Azhar Ali, as the batsmen prospered in good batting conditions at the Sheikh Abu Naser stadium.

Left-handed Aslam, who captained Pakistan's under-19 team before making the grade at senior level, was caught down the leg-side by wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim off Taijul.

Azhar survived two dropped catches by Rahim to remain unbeaten at stumps on 65, reaching his half-century with a six off Shakib Al Hasan.

The hosts suffered a blow when Rahim was forced to leave the field after tea with a bruised finger, leaving Imrul Kayes to don the gloves as Tamim Iqbal took over the captaincy.

Rahim (32) and Soumya Sarkar (33) put on 62 for the sixth wicket before Pakistan hit back with three wickets in the space of seven runs.

Sarkar was dismissed by another good catch by Asad in the covers off Hafeez before Yasir had Rahim caught in the covers and bowled Taijul round his legs.

Wahab returned after lunch to remove Mohammad Shahid and last man Rubel Hossain quickly, leaving Shuvagata Hom unbeaten on 12.

Bangladesh had prospered on the opening day through Mominul Haque, who top-scored with 80, and useful contributions from opener Kayes (51) and Mohammad Mahmudullah (49).

The second and final Test of the short series will start at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Dhaka on May 6.

The hosts, who resumed their first innings at the overnight total of 236 for 4, were confronted by steady spin bowling by the Pakistanis on a good pitch at the Sheikh Abu Naser stadium.

Yasir went into the break with three for 84, while off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez and left-armer Zulfiqar Babar chipped in with two wickets each.

Bangladesh lost the early wicket of star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who was smartly caught at leg-slip by Asad Shafiq off Babar for 25.

Mushfiqur Rahim (32) and Soumya Sarkar (33) put on 62 for the sixth wicket before Pakistan hit back with three wickets in the space of seven runs.

Sarkar was dismissed by another good catch by Asad in the covers off Hafeez before Yasir had Rahim caught in the covers and bowled Taijul Islam round his legs.

At lunch, Shuvagata Hom was unbeaten on 11 and Mohammad Shahid was on six.

Bangladesh had swept the preceding one-day series 3-0 and also defeated Pakistan for the first time in a Twenty20 international.

Yasir strikes after slow Bangladesh start

Leg-spinner Yasir Shah struck the first blow for Pakistan after Bangladesh made a slow, but steady start to reach 60 for one at lunch on the opening day of the first Test at Khulna on Tuesday.

Yasir broke a 52-run opening stand between Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes just before the break after the hosts won the toss and elected to bat on the slow wicket at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium.

Tamim fell for 25 as Azhar Ali took a sharp catch at forward short-leg in the second over of Yasir, who had missed the preceding limited-overs series due to injury.

At lunch, Kayes was unbeaten on 35 and Mominul Haque had yet to score.

Kayes survived a strong leg-before appeal off the third ball of the innings from Junaid Khan, as the TV umpire turned down Pakistan's review.

Mohammad Hafeez dropped Tamim at leg slip off left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar when he was on 16.
