ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will continue its longstanding practice of interacting with the Kashmiri leadership despite objections from the Indian government, said a foreign ministry spokesman on Wednesday.

“As you know meetings between the [All Parties] Hurriyat [Conference] leadership and Pakistan’s high commissioner in New Delhi is a longstanding practice and it will continue,” Riffat Masood, the acting spokesperson for the Foreign Office told The Express Tribune.

She was responding to recent criticism in the Indian media about Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit’s meeting with veteran Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani in New Delhi. Basit visited Geelani’s residence to brief him about the outcome of the recent talks between the foreign secretaries of Pakistan and India.

India cancelled the foreign secretary-level talks in August last year at the last moment as a protest over the Pakistani high commissioner’s meeting with the Kashmiri leaders.

But the spokesperson rejected the Indian concerns, saying that Pakistan “recognises the Hurriyat as the true representatives of the Kashmiri people and hence regular meetings take place with them”.

“India is well aware of this practice and should not be raising any objection in this regard,” Riffat emphasised.

FO rejects Indian allegation

The spokesperson also rejected the allegations levelled by the Indian external affairs minister that the Indian High Commission staff in Pakistan was subjected to ‘intrusive surveillance’.

“There has been no such incident or complaint by the Indian High Commission to us in this regard,” Riffat said when approached to seek Pakistan’s reaction to the Indian claim.

John B | 9 years ago | Reply In the mean time, PDP-BJP government elected by 70% of the voters in J&K formed a government after swearing in the name of god(Allah, as they desired) to protect the unity and integrity of India following Indian national anthem. So, what did PAK talk to foreign secretary again?
zara | 9 years ago | Reply @Pity: yes in another such news comments another guy wrote same thing. They openly confess here. They are involoved in fata, balochistan, punjab militant groups and with the support of our politicians. Najam sethi is one such element from indian side working on our soil. @Haider, doval or no doval, this is india's agenda since our nation's creation. Congress was less warmonger but it would do similar stuff but with a smile on face, modis agression was there since his election campaign. In last 12 years what had been going in pakistan. It wasn't india alone it had america with it too. Only difference is this gov is a much bigger war monger and they openly speak of their militant activities on our soil. But indians are brave ,they killed our aps kids. Read history, when india worked on bangladesh it had support of kgb, thats why no regret in balkanization of ussr. Us nay hamara aik hissa tora tha it broke into 10 parts. Last 10 years it was cia mossad wth india. But again like russia , usa got badly humiliated by taliban, its economy shaken. India in the process of raising militancy in pakistan always overlooked insurgencies on her own soil. One fourth india is taken up by maoists. Usa always cried of risk of militants attacking our nuclear weapons etc. Use common sense, what those mountains inhabiting militants would know how to operate nuclear weapons. We even dont have ranges covering distance to usa. What those animal militants would do with weapons. If someone they will blowup then perhaps it will be their ownselves first. Et publish my comment. if indians want to meet baloch separatists, then sure go ahead.
