ISLAMABAD: Pakistan successfully test fired on Monday a surface-to-surface ballistic missile, capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads as far as 2,750 kilometres.

The test launch of Shaheen-III was aimed at validating various designs and technical parameters of the weapon system at its maximum range, read a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The successful launch with its impact point in the Arabian Sea was witnessed by senior officers from the Strategic Plans Division (SPD) and forces, and scientists and engineers of strategic organisations, said the military’s media wing.

The long range of the latest missile puts all strategic centres of India within reach. Defence experts believe this would serve as deterrence against New Delhi’s ambition to acquire more advanced missile technology from the United States and Israel.

SPD Director-General Lieutenant General Zubair Mahmood Hayat congratulated scientists and engineers on achieving yet another milestone of historic significance, and termed it a major step towards strengthening Pakistan’s arsenal.

He also appreciated the technical prowess, dedication and commitment of scientists who contributed wholeheartedly to make this launch a success.

He expressed his full confidence over the strategic command and control system and the forces’ capability to safeguard the security of the motherland against any potential threats.

Ajmal | 9 years ago | Reply Pakistan now must also develop sea-based nuclear capabilities with the submarine-launched Ballistic missile. Development of nuclear triad, which incorporates air-based, land-based, and sea-based ballistic missiles will be beneficial for Pakistan because the second-strike capabilities will have a positive influence on strategic stability in South Asia.
