Weather woes: Five killed in rain related accidents

Five people were killed and several others were injured after heavy rains were witnessed in many parts of the province throughout Sunday and early on Monday morning.


Rescue 1122 officials said a woman and her daughter had died in Bahawalnagar after the roof of their house collapsed overnight.

They said two people were killed after the roof of their house in Shahdara caved in. Rescue 1122 officials said 30-year-old Naveed and 28-year-old Shazia were found dead under the debris. They said another man was taken to Mayo Hospital.

In Faisalabad, a labourer was killed and another was injured when the roof of an under-construction house caved in at Peoples Colony.

Police said 40-year-old Javaid Ali and 17-year-old Yaseem Hasan had arrived at the house at Babar Chowk in the morning when the roof collapsed. Rescue 1122 took them to a hospital where Ali was declared dead on arrival.

Doctors said Hasan had been seriously injured and his condition was critical.

Separately, 40-year-old Shahid Emanuel was injured when the roof of his house caved in under rainwater in Muhammadi Colony.

The injured man was shifted to a hospital where his condition was reported stable.

Forecast

The Met Department has forecast rains with snowfall over the hills from Sunday to Tuesday.

Met officials said a westerly wave had entered Punjab through Balochistan on Saturday night and was expected to pass after Tuesday.

They said snowfall was expected in upper Punjab hills. Sporadic thunderstorms with rain are expected in Hazara, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Gujranwala, they said.
