FAISALABAD: Relatives of a man who died in police custody staged a protest demonstration in Jhang on Sunday.

The demonstrators gathered in front of the Jhang district headquarters (DHQ) hospital and staged a sit-in.

Talking to reporters, Rehmat Ali, one of the protesters, said that Nazakat, a resident of Dhanuwala village, had been arrested on Saturday by Satellite Town police.

“He had gone to Chund Pul looking for work. On the way, he was arrested by Satellite Town police on suspicion of theft.

At the police station, he was beaten up to force a confession. When he fainted, policemen did not provide him first aid or take him to hospital. He died at the police station,” Ali said.

The demonstrators demanded immediate action against policemen involved in the murder.

The Jhang deputy superintendent of police (DSP) talked to the protesters and assured them that action would be taken against any policemen found involved in the death.

The Satellite Town SHO told The Express Tribune that Nazakat had been an active member of Kali dacoit gang and was wanted in a number of cases.

“We traced him through his mobile phone and arrested him from Chund Pul.

We did not torture him. He was presented before the investigation police superintendent. When we were bringing him back, he suffered a massive heart attack and died before any medical help could be provided to him,” he said.
