KARACHI:

Seasoned player Aqeel Khan will begin Pakistan’s Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Round-II tie against Philippines’ Patrick-John Tierro in the singles rubber on Friday at the Philippine Columbian Association in Manila.

The team – including Aisamul Haq Qureshi, Yasir Khan and last-minute addition Samir Iftikhar – will play their home-tie in Manila. They had earlier defeated Vietnam 3-2 in the first round. Aqeel predicted that the court conditions in Manila are usually exhausting and the team, that has lost its last three ties against the hosts, will face tough competition.

Meanwhile, this is the first time Aisam is representing Pakistan in the Philippines.

“It will not be an easy tie,” Aisam had told The Express Tribune. “But we’ll try our best.” Aqeel will also play the doubles rubber along with Aisam while Iftikhar will play the second singles tie against Ruben Gonzales.
