LAHORE:

Ameeruddin Medical College (AMC), the latest public sector medical school in Lahore will start classes this year with 100 students at a Post Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI) building.

The decision was taken at a meeting on Thursday. The meeting was attended by the PGMI Principal Anjum Habib Vohra and senior Health Department officials.

The classes will be held at a PGMI building on Birdwood Road.

The college will be attached to the PGMI and the Lahore General Hospital (LGH).

“We have the faculty to start classes of MBBS Part 1,” Vohra said.

“Similar arrangements have been made earlier, including when classes were held for several years at a medical college in another city,” he said.

He said the college will shift to its new building by the time the first batch of students reaches the final year.

A senior Health Department official who attended the meeting told The Tribune on the condition of anonymity, “There were two options: to rent a private building or to make arrangements at a PGMI building.

The PGMI option is more economical since laboratories and equipment are already available.”

He said plans for the college were almost complete. It will take two to three years to shift the AMC to its permanent building,” he said.

Officials at the Health Department’s Technical Wing believe AMC will be the fourth on the merit list this year after King Edward Medical University (KEMU), Allama Iqbal Medical College and Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS).

University of Health Sciences (UHS) has advertised 100 seats for Ameeruddin Medical College in its prospectus.
