Pakistan made light of their modest target, cruising home in 14.5 overs for the loss of only three wickets. The ease of Pakistan's win marked them out as one of the favourites for the ICC World Twenty20 tournament which starts in Sri Lanka on Sept. 18.
For Australia, it was a chastening loss just two days after the joy they experienced in winning the one-day international series 2-1. "If there was just one reason why we only made 89 then we would rectify it but hopefully it's just one bad performance and we'll try not to repeat it again," Australia captain George Bailey told reporters.
Pakistan impressed in the field and their spinners once again proved effective at shackling the Australian batsmen. The wickets were shared among the bowlers, with Sohail Tanvir capturing three, spinners Saeed Ajmal, debutant Raza Hassan and captain Mohammed Hafeez two apiece, and Umar Gul one.
"We were very sure about our plans and the bowlers did well to restrict Australia to that total. Our batting and bowling was excellent and the energy (in the field) was good. It's a great sign for Pakistan cricket," Hafeez told reporters.
Australia's total was only 10 runs more than their lowest completed T20 innings. Only three players made double figures for Bailey's side, opener David Warner (22), Bailey himself with 14 and Cameron White who made 15.
Faced with such a modest target, Pakistan did lose the wickets of Hafeez for 17, miscuing fast bowler Patrick Cummins to midwicket, Nasir Jamshed (10), bowled hitting across the line from Ben Hilfenhaus and Imran Nazir (22) who drilled a full toss from Watson to David Hussey at extra-cover.
But Kamran Akmal (31 not out) and Shoaib Malik (nine not out) showed their experience and eased their side across the line, much to the delight of the thousands of Pakistan fans at the Dubai International Stadium. In contrast to Australia's innings, the Pakistan batsmen proved hitting boundaries was perfectly possible, striking 11 fours and a six.
Both teams play the second T20 match on September 7.

Pakistan should send Opener nasir jamshed & imran nazir & hafeez one down. Nazir should play his natural game.
Pakistani cricket fans appear to have very short memories.
@Raj Kafir:
The standard rule is this: when Pakistani team wins, it is because of their great team and if they lose, it is due to match-fixing.
Learn this before commenting here first.
@Raj ask the aussies if it was fixed 'coz they were the losing side
Please for God Sake, PCB should take swift actions before world cup. Following are steps: 1-Remove Misbah from all formats 2-Remove both useless Akmal brothers (who only play politics in team). 3-Remove Shahid Afridi as he is no use in team. 4-Get Gul back, along with Hammad azam & Babar Azam in team. 5-Get Asad S. mind fix and let him know you score u stay in team, 6-Remove a chucky coaches (Whatmore, Fountain & Akram) 7-Replace them with better coaches, also get bowling coach Shoib Akhter. 8-our ex-wicket batting keeper cannot build a keeper? (Rashid & Moin should support) 9-Get Muhammed Amir back in team along side with Junaid Khan. 10- Replace Umar Akmal with shoib Malik or replce with Kamran Akmal. kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal are the big disappointments in our team.
GREAT PLAY by the Pak Team. The Aussies should be crushed 3-0 here. Bring back Mohammed Amir and we will be invincible.
I think credit goes to openers.... Hafeez and Imran nazir!
Want to see Imran and Afridi as opener.
Well Shoaib malik can be a good all rounder, which pakistan have missed in ODI format. I don't understand why Umar gul, Razzaq and Malik not been a part of 3rd ODI match. Then it will be a different scenario for aussies.
Why malik again?
the T20 team of Pakistan is really dangerous! its a totally different ball game & Pakistan is best at T20 format which has won the most T20 matches. Well played team Pakistan, go for the kill & beat aussies 3-0, good luck
Glad the to Imran Nazir back in T 20 squid, he is such a brilliant player, a true match winner, better than Afridi.
Kick out Kamran Akmal, he doesn't deserve to be in the team
No problem...Australia has been humiliating us on number of occasions.....One win is not going to make me happy...I want the dexterity of late 90's in my team..where opponents were feared by Amir & Saeed opening and Waqar & Wasim attacking.
Was it fixed? Because ODIs were fixed.
@syed: im not being entirely cynical, but misbah didn't rotate the bowlers properly in the 3rd odi. he should have given ajmal 2 more overs when he had the aussies in a tangle
get ready for indian trolls to show their frustrations here
Pakistan Zindabad.
Great job team Pakistan. Keep it up
and then they get proud and vulnerable and start losing the following matches :p
YES !!!! YES !!!! YES !!!!
@Blithe: Pakistan not using review and doing poor(er) fielding and catching was the bigger reason the other day. large number of people would have criticized him had he used up Ajmal and then lost b/c of no good bowler left for the death overs. We have right to opinion, asking questions and demand improvements but at the same time give him the executive previlege of making decisions.
Besides he is(was) not even playing today, we just won a good game and should just enjoy that on its own, not at the expense of someone who is not even playing
Although I fully credit Misbah for resurrection Pakistan cricket , him not going in for the kill by using Ajmal early on was certainly not smart captaining .
This is what happens when you take all your catches. But ET why call target as 'trivial' ahead of time??
@Spyder you don't need to be sarcastic to Misbah(tuk tuk) to praise Hafeez both are honest contributor for Pakistan. Misbah has given us the respect and competitive edge back and deserves respect.
Captaincy masterclass from Hafeez thus far! great rotation of bowlers, take notes tuk tuk
We're doing pretty well guys, cannot lose from here. 52-5!
Get rid of Kamran Akmal.
