KARACHI:

At 9:30am on Monday morning, four men in police uniform walked into a branch of Muslim Commercial Bank in Nazimabad with the intention to rob it. As they screamed at the staff to step aside, the bank manager managed to alert the authorities by pressing the security alarm button.

According to the SHO of the Nazimabad police station, Jahanzaib, the alarm was very loud and it alerted the bank’s on-duty security guards. The suspects tried to escape but were intercepted by a police constable stationed near the bank. Rahim Buksh, the constable, used his AK-47 to open fire at the suspects. He managed to kill two of them. The police were not able to identify or affiliate the suspects with any political party or gang. They seized an AK-47 and repeater gun from them.

AIG Akhtar Gorchani said that the police constable will receive a cash reward of Rs50,000 and a promotion. “This was the third attempted bank robbery the police managed to foil this year,” he said. “I am sure the criminals will be discouraged by our response. Security is the banks responsibility.”

The police claim that banks were taking their security more seriously now as three people had alerted the police when MCB was being robbed.

In 2011, there were 17 reported bank robberies.

The title is misleading. It should be more precise.

Strange title. Is ET on the side of the robbers or the police?
