150 health officials to be sent abroad for training

Chief minister seeks alternate power supply for teaching hospitals.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Monday that at least 150 doctors, nurses and technical staff would soon be sent for training in prevention and treatment of dengue fever.


He was speaking at a meeting of the emergency committee set up for controlling dengue virus.

Sharif said medium- and long-term policies would be formulated to eradicate the virus from the province. He directed Health Secretary Jahanzeb Khan to install uninterrupted power supply (UPS) at the teaching hospitals to ensure that the machinery used in the treatment of dengue fever was not damaged due to excessive power outages.

He also directed officials concerned to ensure that all used tyre godowns and bus stands in the province were cleared of dengue mosquito larvae. He said a strategy should be devised and submitted to him in two days.

Dr Bambang Gritno and Dr Rita Kusriastuti of the Indonesian team were also present on the occasion.

Nine die of dengue:

Nine more deaths from the disease were reported in the city over the last 24 hours, increasing the number to 152 in the province and 140 in Lahore. As many as 325 more people were diagnosed with the disease on Monday. Of these, 258 belonged to Lahore.

The number of dengue patients reported in the province has reached 13,399 – 11,687 in Lahore.

A Health Department spokesperson said 13,074 have been treated and discharged from public hospitals (11,429 in Lahore) and 1,573 were still under treatment.
