ISLAMABAD:

Italian oil and gas exploration company ENI will soon begin construction of a 400-megawatt power plant in Pakistan, according to Board of Investment Chairman Saleem H Mandviwalla.

“Pakistan can benefit from the expertise of ENI by utilising its gas fields optimally for power production,” he said while talking to ENI Chief Executive Paolo Scaroni at the International Economic Forum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, according to a BOI statement issued on Monday.

Mandviwalla asked ENI to capitalise on the opportunities for offshore exploration in Pakistan.

Scaroni suggested working in new gas fields for power generation on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis and said the company was committed to working as a strategic partner in the development of Pakistan’s oil sector by making company expertise, know-how and innovative technologies available.

He, however, expressed concern over ‘exaggerated threat perception’ about Pakistan among foreigners, especially western investors.
