In the sound and fury over the Facebook ban, both in the media and in the individual comments and messages of Pakistanis all over the internet, it does not appear that the facts are clearly known. It all started last month when the American channel, Comedy Central, made a decision to censor the 201st episode of South Park, the most ruthless animated satire in contemporary times, after the creators Parker and Stone were threatened with the fate of Theo van Gogh, a Dutch film director who was killed. The producers, quaking in their boots, placed a “censored” over the depiction of the Prophet (pbuh) and beeped the name when it was mentioned. They also completely removed a segment on censorship and chose not to provide the show on the internet. All in all a wise choice, given the circumstances.
The response to this censorship in the American free press was typical; a Seattle cartoonist drew a cartoon in the style of a poster by a, now pay attention, fictitious group ‘Citizens Against Citizens Against Humour. This ‘poster’ declared May 20 “Everybody Draw Muhammad (pbuh) Day”. Now, it wasn’t long before some other jokers decided to make this a Facebook event which in turn spawned the Facebook group of the same name. The cartoonist, Molly Norris, had created the cartoon as a sign of protest against the censorship of an American show. It wasn’t long before she realised she was in way over her head and distanced herself and said: “I have backed off of being associated with any group or cause.”
However, this back-pedalling came too late, for the “joke” took on a life of its own. May 20 has come and gone and it has become increasingly clear that in the quintessential style of an absurdist play, the boundaries between fiction and reality have blurred. What is truly remarkable is just how quickly 11,812 (official number of participants in the page) individuals from across the globe jumped on board! It is almost as if they were just waiting for an opportunity to make complete asses of themselves. Hang on, they probably were waiting, after all it is Facebook, and we all know that those who spend too much time on it really have nothing better to do and now it’s been proven.
Why are these people bothering about protecting free speech, and why does anyone care about what they say or do. They’re idiots! They’re fighting for the right to verbally vomit. Those who have fought for the freedom to speak would be rolling in their graves.
However, curiously, one member of the group states: “This isn’t about a hatred for Islam. This is about the fact that Christians in this country have watched for years as Christ has been mocked, satirised, and all-out slandered by the media in this country. The major networks and cable channels have made millions from comedy in which our figure of worship has been portrayed in a disrespectful light. Even South Park, the show that sparked this whole controversy, has done so. Most of us Christians just shrug it off, or we even have the ability to laugh at it. However, we’re pretty sick of being told which religious figures we can satirise and which we can’t. That’s what this is all about, and if you don’t understand it you’re part of the problem.”

Why to ignore? Why not to speak to create understanding at both ends! We don’t need to run away from learning about each other and bridging gaps.Recommend
To Raheel
Bridging gaps? Bridging gaps?!
They have already shown through their massive participation for this event and time and time again through their other mediums of mass communication that they don’t care about bridging the gaps. They damn care about you. Its about time you should start damn caring about them.
WAKE UP FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!Recommend
freedom of speech and expression does not mean that some one undress him or herself and doesn’t care about his or her limits.Where someone’s limits ends there from other’s limits begins if a person doesn’t know these principals, he is either a bloody fool or insane. This is obviously an intellectual terrorism and extremism and is outrightly against the norms of peaceful co existence.Recommend
I agree with Sacha Akhter and with those who believe that shunning these websites is the best form of revenge. Honestly, we are giving more power to the idiots who mock our religion by taking such drastic steps: more light is shed on them through the media. If the people and the media just ignored this in the first place, nothing of the sort would have happened.
Ok to those who now think that I wouldn’t stand up for my religion (Islam) and that my suggestion to ignore them is equivalent to giving up, you guys are also mistaken. In contrast, I frankly feel sorry for those who have nothing better to do than to make fun my Prophet (PBUH), my values and my religious heritage because they lack anything worth valuing.Recommend
This is issue of love and hate.
If we love our Rasool (saw) .
Can not we just sacrifice few internet sites.Recommend
@Roda / If that’s a case can’t we or our developers can create something similar to Facebook which we can use to get connected to our family members, friends, and other people. Oh wait ! they are not experienced enough … Oh ok ! .. what ! — The govt. is corrupted that it’s not funding P@SHA and putting all the money in their own pockets … – Oh ! We need to go through such issues to establish our own payment gateways, oh – We need to bring IMF to the table to ask for money while we can stop the Telecom companies to get License Auction for atleast 3 – 4 Billion US$ (like india did 3-4 days ago)to cover our costs instead we will stop the technology and ask money from others, let me guess US … oh and you are crying on just a fact that FACEBOOK SHOULD BE BLOCKED … Oh comeon !Open your eyes, it’s the era of technology, stay in the stone age. I can defend my muslim rights just by ignoring those idiots !.

I remember a line from a very known book “he who cant get his hair cut according to Sunnah, how can he get his throat cut for PBUH”…..Recommend
In my opinion most the websites containing such content should have blocked way before 20th may. My only concern is why PTA was waiting for LHC’s order to ban it. We would have easily ignored such idiots in that manner. By taking so much time few idiots from our part of the divide got the reason to protest in favor and against the so called freedom of speech. Anyways, nicely written.Recommend
My guess is the PTA somehow abused its authority by blocking the entire domains of YouTube and Facebook. This in itself created apprehensions about our own freedom of thought and expression. A much smarter move would have been to block the alleged pages!Recommend
