KARACHI: While Sindh government is still talking about the implementation of solid waste management plan, land grabbers have started to encroach upon the land allotted for landfill sites.

More than 500 of the 3,000 acres landfill site near Surjani Town have already been encroached. This was revealed in a briefing held at Sindh Assembly on Thursday.

The meeting was arranged after opposition leader Khawaja Izharul Hasan wrote a number of letters to local government minister and other relevant authorities to brief MPAs about progress of the solid waste management programme, which is being initiated under public-private partnership to lift the garbage from various areas of Karachi and other districts.

Solid Waste Management Board (SWMB) managing director informed the meeting that initially the work will start in Karachi and Benazirabad.

On this, Pakistan Muslim League-Functional MPA Nand Kumar expressed his concern and questioned why the programme was not being implemented in others districts of Sindh. "Why is everything being started from Benazirabad?"

The meeting was also attended by Syed Sardar Ahmed of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Jam Madad Ali and Samar Ali Khan of Pakistan Tehreek e Inaaf. The participants also waited for local government minister, who did not turn up.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Hasan said that it is prime responsibility of the local bodies' representatives to lift the garbage, but Sindh government has not given any authority to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). He also asked why Sukkur and Larkana have been excluded from this scheme. "I request government to start campaign about this project by publishing Sindhi and Urdu literature," he added.
