Two ‘fake’ Taliban held for extortion

The police was able to arrest them with the coordination of Citizens Police Liaison Committee

KARACHI: Gulshan-e-Iqbal police claimed to have arrested two suspects allegedly involved in extortion activities, according to a press statement issued by Gulshan division SP Dr Fahad.

The suspects, identified as, Abdul Rasheed and Waqar Islam, were residents of Surjani Town and New Karachi, respectively. Rasheed and Islam used to make extortion calls and associated themselves as Taliban members, said Fahad.

The police was able to arrest them with the coordination of Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) after the police received a complaint by a citizen, Waqaruddin, who received an extortion call by the suspects. The suspects had demanded Rs500,000 from Waqaruddin. The suspects had also been involved in collecting extortion money from traders. A case against them has been registered and further investigation is under way.
