HARIPUR:

A Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz member of the district council in Haripur was killed on court premises in the early hours of Saturday. Javed Khan Jadoon died on the spot after he was shot at point blank range and his nephew has been arrested as primary suspect.

An attempt was made on Javed’s life earlier in May, which he survived but six of his entourage lost their lives. Cases had been registered against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Atif Khan and his brother Asif Khan, sons of former minister the late Musnif Khan Jadoon – also Javed’s relatives.

A police official on condition of anonymity told The Express Tribune, “The PML-N councillor visited the district court to attend the hearing of a murder case.” He said, “After attending the proceedings, Javed Khan moved towards his vehicle parked near the canteen inside the court premises.” He added, “As he was about to get into his vehicle, a man approached him and pumped more than three bullets into his head from point blank range, killing him on the spot.”

The policeman added, “The assassin, clad in a lawyer’s uniform, has been arrested and identified as 22-year-old Junaid Khan Jadoon, son of Younas Khan Jadoon (Javed’s brother).” He said, “In a bid to escape, he climbed the wall of Government Centennial Model High School No 1 for Boys which is situated near the district court but was caught and overpowered by the school staff.” He further said, “Police rushed to the site and took him into custody. He has been shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.” An FIR of the killing was not registered till filing of this report.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses present at the site of the murder told the police that after killing the PML-N leader, Junaid was heard saying, “Chacha aap kee family ka mujh peh udhar tha” or “My family owed you this.” He was saying this in reference to the murder of his father in which Javed was initially a suspect but was later acquitted.  Younas Khan was killed outside the Haripur district court in May 1994.

Local politics

Javed Khan Jadoon, a resident of Basti Buland Khan, was elected district councillor from Kholiyan Bala union council on PML-N’s ticket during the local government elections held earlier in May.

On May 8, his convoy was attacked near Toru Dhok village with AK-47 rifles and hand grenades while he was returning after addressing an election meeting in Chitti Dhaki village.

In the attack, six of his guards were killed but Javed was only injured. He nominated Atif Khan in the FIR. Atif and his relatives are still behind bars in Haripur jail in the said case.

Javed Khan’s family has an old enmity with the family of late Munsif Khan and several persons from both sides have been killed in the last four decades.

Three months ago, Javed Khan was nominated directly in the murder of Bilal, a resident of Toru Dhok, and was arrested by the police. However, he was granted bail from the Abbottabad bench of
the Peshawar High Court a few days back.
