LAHORE: Commissioner Abdullah Khan Sumbal said on Thursday that the Commissioner School Cricket Cup 2015 underway would promote cricket in public and private educational institutions.

Sumbal made the remarks while speaking to newsmen at his office.

He said the initiative would bring the most talented in the under-16 age group to the national level. The commissioner said five teams from public and privates schools each would participate at the district level. He said quarter-final, semi-final and final matches would be organised later among the winning eight teams at the city’s Gaddafi Stadium. Sumbal said schools had always been nurseries of cricket that had produced scores of national heroes.

The cup commenced in all districts of the division on Thursday with DCO Muhammad Usman inaugurating the tournament and unveiling its trophy. The DCO said matches would be initially conducted across two pools.

He said winning teams of both pools would later play against each other. DCO Usman said the tournament’s semi-final would be held on December 2 and its final would be organised on December 4 at Lawrence Gardens.

The DCO inaugurated tournament’s first match between Model Town’s Government Model High School for Boys and Qazi Public School by playing a shot.

Students from Qila Laxman Singh’s City District Government Boys High School, Lahore School System, Lower Mall’s Government Central Model High School, Unique School System and Wahdat Road’s Government Pilot High School for Boys are in Pool A while Pool B is composed of Syed Public School System, Multan Road’s Government Islamia High School for Boys, Model Town’s Government Model High School for Boys and Qazi Public School.
