BAHAWALPUR:
Two men on a motorcycle shot dead a 22-year-old man near the City Railway Station on Tuesday. His family has demanded that the police register the murder case under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

On Thursday, the victim’s family, friends and some members of the civil society staged a demonstration in front of the commissioner’s office and demanded that the police add Section 7-ATA to the FIR. They appealed to the chief minister, the police inspector general, the RPO and the Bahawalpur DPO to ensure that the culprits were arrested as soon as possible.

Sohail Asghar, a student at the Bahawalpur Technology College, was hanging out with his friends near the railway station when two men on a motorcycle shot him. Asghar was critically injured and was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The complainants nominated two people in the FIR and the Civil Lines police registered the case under Section 302.

Asif Ikhlaq, a relative of the victim, told The Express Tribune that Asghar’s murder was an act of terrorism however the case registered by the police did not include Section 7-ATA. He also said the police proceedings on the case had been excruciatingly slow. “They have not arrested anyone…we want justice and we want the murderers behind bars without delay.”

Muhammad Imran, PRO to the RPO, told The Express Tribune that no family member had contacted the RPO office to request the addition of Section 7-ATA to the FIR. “If the family requests it, we might add it after investigating the case in accordance with the law.”
