‘Illegal’ transfers: Court restrains EOBI from transferring union leaders

Petitioners claim EOBI chairman deposited employees’ money in a fund he made in his name.

KARACHI:
A division bench of the Sindh High Court restrained Employees Old Benefit Institution (EOBI) authorities from transferring its employees who are leaders of the Collective Bargaining Agent (CBA).

The bench, comprising Chief Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Justice Munib Akhtar, was hearing a constitutional petition filed by Tajammul Hussain, the EOBI Employees Federation CBA president, and four other employees who have been transferred to different places, including remote areas of the country.

The petitioners’ counsel, Haider Imam, submitted that the EOBI chairman established a separate fund in his name and thus violated orders of the federal government of depositing two-day salary of EOBI employees to the Prime Minister Flood Relief Fund.

The petitioner objected to the establishment of the “illegal new fund” and also objected to the deduction of the employees’ 15-day salary towards the fund.

There was a huge protest by the petitioners after which their salaries of two days were deducted and deposited to the PM Flood Relief Fund, the counsel said. However, the petitioners were transferred to remote areas, which is illegal, he added. The bench ordered EOBI authorities not to transfer them till further orders. The bench adjourned the hearing till January 12.
