Serbia shuts borders for Pakistani migrants

Macedonia too was only letting in refugees from the three war-ravaged countries

Serbia and Macedonia have announced that entry for refugees from Pakistan and some other countries will now be restricted, UN’s refugee agency said on Thursday.

“Since yesterday [Wednesday] afternoon Serbian authorities allow into the country only refugees from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq,” said United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesperson Melita Sunjic. She added that the refugees are only being admitted once they have documents to prove their status. “They turn back all the others to Macedonia”.

But Macedonia too was only letting in refugees from the three war-ravaged countries. Sunjic said migrants from countries such as Pakistan, Liberia, Morocco, Sri Lanka and Sudan were being turned back from Macedonian borders as well.

Jasmin Redzepi, president of Macedonian NGO LEGIS, told AFP by telephone that Macedonia too was also allowing only Iraqis, Afghans and Syrians into the country.

tees | 8 years ago | Reply there are hundreds of Indian refugees also not just Pakistani and Bangladeshi or srilanka. Just google news few days back. So why are ppl from one of largest democracy migrating.

First they need to enter Greece which is in EU. then Macedonia, then Serbia, and then again EU.EU decided to not accept anymore ppl from other countries than Syria. I will remind you that Serbia is one of the countries that didn't build a wall or barbwire around borders. Ask ppl from Pakistan who are currently in Serbia how they are treated comparing to Greece, Hungary, etc... Even Serbia is small and poor country and not even in EU where all these ppl want to go. If Serbia shuts borders to ppl from Pakistan, this is due to EU shutting borders in Greece and Macedonia, and also Croatia and Hungary, so it is not Serbia against Pakistan ppl.
