Army chief General Raheel Sharif held meetings with top US defence officials at the Pentagon on Tuesday.
Director-General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lt-Gen Asim Bajwa in a series of tweets said, “Defence cooperation, strengthening military to military relations, regional security and need for enhanced coordination was discussed.”
Pakistan committed to eliminate terrorism from soil, army chief tells US
The army chief met US Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter and Deputy Secretary of Defence Robert O Work, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) Gen Joseph Dunford, Army Chief of Staff Gen Mark Milley and Centcom (Central Command) chief Gen Lloyd Austin.
Later in the day, CJCS General Dunford hosted a special banquet at a military base in honour of General Raheel, who is currently in the US on a five-day visit. The banquet was attended by top officials including General Austin and General Miley, DG ISPR said.
Earlier, General Raheel said Pakistan is committed to eliminate terrorism and extremism from its soil for good.
Pentagon boss all praise for Pakistan’s counterterror ops
According to the ISPR, General Raheel, who is on a five-day official visit to the United States, met US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter at Pentagon on Tuesday, and discussed Pak-US defence relations, as well as regional security.
The US defence secretary appreciated Pakistan’s contributions and sacrifices in fighting the war on terror, and acknowledged the effects of successful counter-terrorism operations that have opened the opportunities for regional peace.
