Assault charges: SHO suspended for indecent behaviour on Diwali

Accused of harassing singer invited to perform at event

SUKKUR: The SHO of New Pind police station in Sukkur has been suspended after he was accused of getting drunk on Diwali and misbehaving with women.

Sukkur Operations DIG Dr Kamran Fazal suspended and reverted Inspector Shams Bhayo. He also appointed Site ASP Asim Jusra as inquiry officer to conduct further investigations into the matter and present a report.

On the night of Diwali, Inspector Bhayo apparently made his way to Inter Pak Inn hotel, where a programme was being held by the Hindu community to mark the festival of lights, said Hindu Panchayat Sukkur president Mukhi Eshwar Lal Makheja. The SHO got drunk with the hotel manager, Nisar Channa, and started misbehaving with the guests, especially the women.



Makheja added that the drunk men forced themselves into the room of a female singer who was invited by the community to perform at the event. They were sexually harassing her when she screamed and attracted the attention of people nearby. Some people rushed into her room and forced the men to leave, he said.

Their behaviour upset the elders of the Hindu community who informed the DIG, the SSP and the Rangers authorities of the incident. The police took immediate action and raided the hotel. The inspector and the manager were arrested but were released after an hour or so, said an official privy to the developments.

According to Makheja, the police also seized empty wine bottles from the room of the hotel manager.
