KARACHI:
Two policemen were shot dead while performing their duty in the outskirts of the city on Saturday when unidentified motorists opened fire on them. The responsibility of the attack has been claimed by the banned terrorist organisation, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

The attack came two days after six suspected militants belonging to the same group were killed in an encounter in Manghopir. The deceased policemen were identified as Ali Raza and Ghulam Jaffar, both constables posted at Sachal police station. They were on patrol duty in the area.

So far, 81 policemen have been killed in such targeted attacks in the province alone. This was the third attack on the law enforcers in the country this month claimed by the same TTP group.

According to officials privy to the matter, the policemen had established a picket near Jiwani Heights, opposite Daewoo Bus Terminal off the Super Highway.

They were on patrol duty in the afternoon when some four assailants on two motorcycles approached them.

The gunmen fired multiple shots at the two policemen. Raza died on the spot while Jaffar succumbed to his wounds in the hospital. Both of them were rushed to the Ojha Campus of Dow University of Health Sciences, which is the closest health facility to the site of the incident.

Investigators have collected at least 12 bullet cases from the crime scene: nine of 9mm calibre and three of 30-bore. The empties will be sent to the laboratory for forensic examination.

This is done to ascertain if the pistol from which the bullet had been fired was used in other such attacks.

Hours after the incident, the TTP claimed the responsibility of the attack in a statement issued on the internet. The militant group said that their commandos belonging to what they call their 'Special Task Force' targeted two policemen near the Super Highway.

The statement carried the name of Muhammad Khorasani, a spokesperson for the terrorist group. It further added that the assailants remained safe in the whole incident.
