FAISALABAD:

More than two dozen activists led by Defence of Human Rights staged a demonstration on Friday to protest the disappearance of DHR coordinator Rizwan Niazi two days ago.

The demonstration was led by DHR chairperson Amna Masooq Janjua. The participants marched from Zila Council Chowk to the SSP Operation’s Office where they staged a sit-in. Talking to newsmen, Janjua said the DHR had staged a demonstration on November 10.

“On the same night, DHR Chief Coordinator Rizwan NIazi was taken away from his house on gunpoint. His family contacted us in a terrified state. We have been running from pillar to post for his recovery but police are not cooperating in this regard.” She said the group would move the Supreme Court if police did not register a kidnapping complaint.

Demonstration against the police

Scores of residents staged a demonstration against Sargodha Road police for failing to arrest a man accused of robbery in Chak No3JB.

The protestors blocked Faisalabad-Sargodha Road, suspending traffic for several hours. The protesters chanted slogans against police and demanded action against policemen who had failed to provide security in the neighbourhood.

Muhammad Aslam, one of the protesters, said there had been dozens of robberies in their neighbourhood over the last few weeks. He said police were not taking any steps to curb crime.

A DSP assured them that the robbery suspect would be arrested and security in the neighbourhood would be tightened.
