Smew duck spotted for first time at Head Marala in Sialkot
Smew is typically found in colder regions of Europe, northern Asia, migrates south in limited numbers during winter

An unusual sighting of the Smew duck has been confirmed for the first time at Head Marala in Punjab’s Sialkot on Monday, marking a significant development for wetland conservation and habitat improvement in the area.
According to Punjab Wildlife Rangers, the rare waterfowl was spotted swimming in Head Marala Lake by a wildlife photographer, who documented the sighting through photographs. The images were later reviewed and verified by experts, who confirmed the bird’s identification as a Smew duck.
Wildlife officials said the Smew is typically found in the colder regions of Europe and northern Asia and migrates south in limited numbers during winter. Its presence in Pakistan has been recorded only on rare occasions.

Officials noted that the sighting at Head Marala indicates improving aquatic conditions and a healthier natural habitat suitable for migratory birds. They said this reflects the effectiveness of conservation measures taken to protect wetlands and aquatic life in the region.
Punjab Wildlife Rangers further stated that monitoring of bird populations, protection of natural habitats, and action against illegal hunting in the Head Marala area will be strengthened to ensure a safe environment for rare and migratory bird species.
