Pollution: ‘Implement Clean Air Commission’s recommendations’
Advocate Parvez I Mir said two-stroke rickshaws were causing air pollution
LAHORE:
Lahore High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the chief secretary, the environment protection secretary and others on a petition seeking implementation of recommendations of the Lahore Clean Air Commission.
Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah issued the order on a petition filed by a citizen, Anwar Elahi. Representing the petitioner, Advocate Parvez I Mir said two-stroke rickshaws were causing air pollution and had become a major reason for traffic jams in the city. He said cart vendors also clogged traffic by encroaching on green belts and footpaths.
Mir said the LHC had constituted the Lahore Clean Air Commission 10 years ago. He said the commission had made several recommendations to resolve these issues but the government had not implemented those. He said there was no check on underage drivers running rickshaws. He said these rickshaws were not only causing air and noise pollution but also caused traffic jams.
He asked the court to direct the government to implement the recommendations of the commission and ban two-stroke rickshaws. The court, after hearing the arguments, issued a notice to the CS, the environment protection secretary, the excise and taxation director general, the LDA director general, the Parks and Horticulture Authority director general, the traffic DIG and the chief traffic officer. They were given time till November 30 to submit their replies.
