In the backdrop of Mazar-e-Quaid, a burqa-clad young woman, described as the daughter of the country, made men and women repeat after her the vow to work for the interest of the city with honesty.
She was taking oath from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) candidates contesting for the local government elections. She made them promise that if they emerged as victors, they will protect the city from extortion, targeted killing and resolve issues related to education, electricity and water.
The two parties have formed an alliance for the elections, and will be supporting each other’s candidates. A total of 1,219 candidates from the two parties are contesting the elections, a majority of them from the PTI.

At the VIP gate of the Mazar-e-Quaid, Ali Zaidi, PTI’s Karachi president said that the PTI-JI alliance will make Karachi the city that the Quaid-e-Azam had dreamed about. Jamaat-e-Islami’s Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that seat adjustment and the alliance will bring peace to the city. He urged candidates to go for door-to-door campaigns.
PTI’s Naveed Siddiqui, 38, contesting for chairman in UC-27, feels that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement has only spent funds on infrastructure and roads. “They did not spend any money on health and education because there is no way of getting commission,” he said.
White pigeons and balloons were released in the end and the event ended with the national anthem.
