Revenue tickets: No licence renewals this week

Renewal of driving and weapons licences unavailable for revenue tickets 2011 that are required for the purpose.

LAHORE:
People visiting the post offices for the issuance or renewal of driving and weapons licences are being told to return due to the unavailability of the revenue tickets 2011 that are required for the purpose.

The Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Ahmed Mubeen issued an order on December 31, 2010, cancelling the tickets issued in 2010 but the new tickets have not yet been issued.

According to the General Post Office (GPO) officials, the revenue tickets for 2011 are expected to be issued by January 7. Till then, they said, the issuance or renewal of the licences would remain suspended.

Several citizens were seen complaining. They said that the authorities should not have cancelled the old tickets till they had issued the new ones.

Amna Habib, who had come to get the tickets also, said that the notice was issued just a day before the cancellation of the old tickets, which she said was ‘unprofessional’.

She said that the citizens should have been informed at least a week before the cancellation was to take effect. She said that she had bought the tickets on December 30 for Rs2,250 to get driving licences issued for three members of herfamily. The next day, she said, she read in the paper that they had expired. “If the CTO had to cancel the tickets on such a short notice, what was the use of releasing that handout?” she said.

The GPO officials blamed the ‘government’ for the delay.

Mail and Delivery senior postmaster Anwar Sadiq told The Express Tribune that issuing new tickets was not GPO’s responsibility.

He said that despite several reminders to the concerned offices over the last week, the tickets had not been delivered.

He said cancellation of the tickets was not a new policy and the citizens should already on account of past practice that the old revenue tickets would expire on December 31.

The CTO said that he had personally talked to the post master general about the unavailability of the tickets and was informed that the new tickets would be issued by the end of the week.
